This past Sunday I was in church and this particular verse from the bible really struck a chord with me. The prophet Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" For those of you who are not familiar with the Bible, Moses was a prophet who was tasked by God to free the people of Israel from slavery.
What really struck me about the verse was that Moses, a great and notorious leader had feelings of unworthiness. Moses who is known for freeing the slaves of Israel and delivering the 10 Commandments had fear and self-doubt. Whether you resonate with the Bible or not, this verse has a valuable lesson. EVERYONE questions their ability for greatness, even Moses!
Many of us go through life prefacing our words with, “Who am I to do x, y, and z. For some of us it might be, “who am I to be successful?” or “who am I to be great?” For those of us who are coaches or healers it might be, “who am I to serve?” or “who am I to lead?”
These words question our own abilities. We fear that we are not worthy or deserving of the great things that come our way.
As Wallace Wattles once said, “You can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.”
Next time you find yourself thinking, “who am I to be great?” remind yourself that by not making the most of yourself, you are doing a disservice to not only yourself but the entire world. You are doing a disservice to all of the people that you could inspire, lead, and serve.
There may be billions of people in the world but there is truly only one YOU! You have your own unique gifts and talents. You have your own message to share.
Begin to change the words “who am I to be great” to “how many people would miss out by me not making the most of myself?”
Today strive for greatness. You are a messenger for love. Don’t deprive the world of that!
