I first heard of A Course in Miracles over three years ago, shortly after my spiritual awakening. It was talked about in many of the podcast I was listening to and mentioned in many of the books I was reading. Many of my favorite authors and spiritual teachers repeatedly mentioned the Course in their teachings such as Robert Holden, Gerald Jampolsky, Gabby Bernstein, and Marianne Williamson.
I wasn't quite sure what exactly it was. I thought it was just another self-help book but soon learned that it was much more than that. The parts of the Course that I had learned through other authors' work seemed so profound. The words deeply touched me. It was as if a part of myself had awakened and found its home.
I was attending Robert Holden's Coach Camp in San Diego, about a year into my spiritual practice, when I decided it was time to finally pick up a copy of the Course at a local book store and discover what it was all about. To say I was surprised by what I found is an understatement. A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual curriculum which consists of three sections combined into one large book: the "Text", "Workbook for Students," and "Manual for Teachers."
When I first started reading the Course I found it super confusing and hard to understand. I would often find myself rereading the same page several times and still not fully comprehending what I had just read. Despite my initial frustration I continued my studies. I found there to be so much wisdom and beauty beneath the words even if they were, at first, hard to comprehend.
To me, the Course is a way of being. A better way of being then the one I was used to. The Course teaches us how to unlearn the world of fear we have projected from our ego and remember who we really are...beings of love.
Since purchasing the Course almost two years ago, I have incorporated reading and applying the principles into my daily life. I have sprinkled principles of the Course into my teachings and coaching sessions.
A few weeks ago, I purchased Jon Mundy's book, Living a Course in Miracles: An Essential Guide to the Classic Text, and began reading it on a recent flight to Denver. In the back of Mundy's book, was a list of organizations and leaders that taught A Course in Miracles. I noticed it had the address to the center in Denver that was close to where I would be staying. I decided to go. I found the group setting helpful in better understanding the teachings and principles of the text and decided to join a local study group near my home in Southern California. Some of the students in the group have been studying the Course for years or even decades and were able to explain the Course in a way that made sense to me.
The past few weeks, the desire to further learn and teach the Course has been strong. The fearful voice inside my head has been trying to tell me that I am not ready to teach the Course and I am too young and inexperienced in my Course studies.
My work with the Course has taught me this is my ego talking. The ego is "wrong-minded" thinking and at anytime I can turn my fear over to my internal guide, what the course refers to as the Holy Spirit, to return to "right-minded" thinking.
My right-minded thinking tells me that it is time to share what I have learned. I believe when you are meant to read or learn about the Course you will know it. You will feel a similar internal nudge. When you hear words from the Course it too will feel like home.
I will begin my teachings of the Course by sharing a quick video. I talk about my interpretation of a question from the Course, "Would you rather be right or happy?"
If you are interested in learning more about the teachings of the Course, I encourage you to check out my video below.
I hope you enjoyed the video.
With Love and Gratitude,
Would you rather be right or happy?
